The people of the Republic of Indonesia celebrate the country’s 70th anniversary of its independence today (17/8). President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo has instructed national and provincial leaders to hold ceremonies and encouraged other activities to keep the celebratory mood all around

In Jakarta, like in the past years, President Jokowi will lead a flag-hoisting ceremony this morning at the Merdeka Palace front yard. It will start at 10 am.

At 12 pm, following the flag-raising ceremony, Jokowi, Vice President Jusuf Kalla and other state dignitaries will host a reception for Independence veteran freedom fighters at the Merdeka Palace.

At 5 pm, the President again will lead the flag lowering ceremony at the Merdeka Palace.

Then, a state reception will be held at 8 pm today at the State Palace’s garden. Foreign ambassadors and other special guests will join the President and Indonesian dignitaries in the gathering.

In other parts of Jakarta, cabinet ministers will hold flag raising ceremony in their offices. Governor Basuki ‘Ahok’ Tjahaja Purnama, city mayors and lower-level administrators will hold same ceremonies at their respective offices.

The celebration is also taking in many other forms in all other provinces in Indonesia.

In one of Indonesia’s remote provinces East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), today will be special for the villagers. After attending the flag raising ceremony at sub-district government offices, villages will enter into the finals of various competitions with football match being today’s most lively show.

A high school principal outside the NTT capital of Kupang told GIV News that many in their sub-district are expecting today’s football match between villages to turn into a brawl as it has often occurred in the past years. “If it happens, it will even make spectators more amused today,” he said.
