In order to promote Indonesian Tourism to the international market, the Indonesian Embassy in Madrid in cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism Republic of Indonesia has participated in the 38th International Tourism FITUR exhibition held at the IFEMA Building, Madrid on 17-21 January 2018 which was attended by 165 countries, UNWTO, the world’s top tourism official, participating companies and opened by the Spanish King Felipe VI.
The Delegation of the Ministry of Tourism is leaded by the Minister of Tourism Mr. Arief Yahya, Special Staff of Minister of Communication, Deputy Marketing Development II Regional IV, Area II Marketing Manager, Marketing Development Staff II Regional IV, 1 barista, 1 mixologist, 3 dancers and Putri Pariwisata Indonesia 2017.
Indonesian participants who fill the 130.5 m2 pavilion are at the Hall 6 stand D07 consists of 19 tourism industries including 8 travel agents / tour operators and 9 hotels / resorts and 2 DMCs from all over Indonesia:

During the 5-day exhibition, the 130.5 m2 stands of Indonesian pavilion booths were visited by approximately 5,000 visitors (professionals and business entrepreneurs from 17-19 January and for public on January 20-21), which on average consisted of business entrepreneurs travel, print and electronic mass media, as well as interested visitors coming to Indonesia for sightseeing or business trips. Most visitors are on the 4th day (Saturday), which is an exhibition day that opened for public, with the number of visitors and enthusiasts about 2000 people.
Kemenpar (Indonesian Ministry of Tourism) adorned the Indonesian Pavilion booth with Indonesian brand “Wonderful Indonesia” and put up a poster of Indonesia’s tourism object, ASIAN GAMES 2018 Jakarta Palembang, as well as performing a series of cultural performances in the form of dance from Palembang, Kalimantan, Bali as well as Indonesian tourism films and Indonesian souvenirs distribution. Indonesian booth also promotes Indonesian coffee through its Barista company which opened its stand in FITUR through Indonesian coffee taste coffee from Gayo Coffee Aceh.
FITUR 2018 followed by 10,000 companies from 165 countries and attended by 251,000 total visitors who experienced a 2.5% increase, this is the highest record ever achieved by FITUR. The professional visitors amounted to 140,120 people which is a 3% increase compared to last year, while the general visitor amounted to 110,880, FITUR has set up total of 6,800 business relationships meeting agendas. FITUR 2018 is also covered by 7,700 journalists from 59 countries. FITUR 2018 impacted economic benefits reached 260 million euros in 5 days.
For Indonesia, the FITUR is a very appropriate momentum for Indonesia to attract the attention of Spanish tourists and the event to bring together directly, among Indonesian sellers with potential buyers from Spain. Based on the exhibitors’ data, each participant / company in the Indonesian stand gets an average of 20-50 prospective appointments and the estimated number of Spanish tourists from the transaction obtained an average of 200-500 pax / tourist.
On January 17th, there was also a 14th edition UNWTO Awards event at IFEMA Madrid, which was attended by candidates awarded “UNWTO Awards for Excellence and Innovation in Tourism”. The UNWTO Awards are a top award for the global tourism sector and each year UNWTO highlights the creation of knowledge, innovation and knowledge dissemination in tourism conducted by governments and the public.
The UNWTO awards ceremony attended by Tourism Minister Mr. Arief Yahya has announced fourteen finalists from 128 projects from 55 countries: Argentina, China, Portugal, Botswana, Kenya, India, Italy, Philippines, Indonesia, Mexico, Australia, Croatia and Spanish.
The Indonesian representative won the first award, Triponyu.com, by initiating the theme “Connecting communities, friends and local visitors with a unique and happy experience”. The Sumba Hospitality Foundation won the third award by initiating the theme “Educating and empowering local communities for sustainable tourism” and Indonesian representatives competed against Italy and Mexico in the NGO innovation category.
This promotion of Indonesian tourism in FITUR Exhibition 2018 has received great attention from the Spanish community. Some Spanish mass media covered the event in both national print and electronic media.
